SAMCAPS  (n. 814100) is a Marie Skłodowska Curie funded European Industrial Doctorate (EID) in the Horizon 2020 framework, with two participating partners, one from academia (CSGI – Center for Colloid and Surface Science) and one from industry (Procter&Gamble).

SAMCAPS is a high-quality research program that aims to train young professionals in the field of colloid and polymer science through the collaboration between top-level European academic and industrial entities. The goal of the project is to address the current need for bio-degradable materials and efficient consumer goods usage, by exploiting new eco-friendly materials and methods of encapsulation that will be applied in home- and beauty care consumer products where the targeted delivery of beneficial actives is required.

The fellows will have the possibility to work at a world-class scientific level in multidisciplinary and international teams, at the interface between the academic and the industrial world. Procter&Gamble will host and train the early-stage researchers for the application of the developed technology in consumer good products. CSGI will host the early-stage researchers at its premises at the University of Florence/University of Siena and will provide training as well as the necessary means for implementing project activities. A career development plan, for both the academic and industrial part will be established, and its implementation will be seamlessly supported.

Selected candidates will be enrolled in the Ph.D. programme at the University of Siena (ESR1) and Florence (ESR2, ESR3, ESR4) and will spend 18 months at the Procter & Gamble Services Company NV (Brussels, Belgium). The joint supervision of the fellows (from academic and non- academic sector) will be guaranteed.

According to the EU mobility rule, candidates MUST NOT have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc..) in Italy and Belgium for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.

Type of contract: two contracts will be signed: a 18 months temporary contract signed by CSGI and a 18 months temporary contract signed by P&G.

Time period: December 1st 2018 – November 31st 2021

Job Requirements & project descriptions: CSGI and Procter & Gamble are looking for four early-stage researchers (ESR, i.e. in the first 4 years of her/his research career and without a doctoral degree). Candidates must hold a degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science, and must possess a solid background in physical and analytical chemistry. Ideal candidates should also possess basic knowledge in the chemistry of surfaces, polymers and colloids, including the main characterization techniques.

Position 1 (ESR1):  the project will focus on the development of amphiphilic polymers with tailored structures, able to respond to external stimuli and thus function on demand, to encapsulate and release the desired compounds in the target environment under the right stimuli. The trainee will work on amphiphilic graft copolymers, such as polyethylene glycol-graft-polyvinyl acetate (PEG-g-PVAc), and new amphiphilic block copolymer chemically modified or synthesized ex-novo to produce materials with optimal biodegradability and high mechanical resistance. Materials characterization will be performed by spectroscopic (FT-IR, NMR), spectrometric (ToF- SIMS), thermogravimetric (TGA) and rheological methods. Biodegradation will be studied as function of specific environmental conditions on the basis of foreseen applications.

Location: University of Siena, Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, via Aldo Moro 53100, Siena and Procter & Gamble Services Company NV (Brussels, Belgium).

Position 2 (ESR2): the project will focus on the formulation of encapsulation systems for detergent benefit agents such as perfume, to be used in final consumer good products as replacements for current encapsulation technologies. The micro- or nanocapsules will be prepared via the spontaneous self-assembly and/or nanophase segregation of a biodegradable, highly viscous polymer in a surfactant solution, and they will ideally be easily disintegrated by means of external stimuli such as dilution. The ESR will characterize these systems using state-of-the-art techniques like, GCMS, TOF-SIMS, microscopy (i.e., optical, confocal, and scanning electron microscopies), and scattering techniques (i.e. light and X-ray scattering instruments available at CSGI, or neutron scattering through application for beam-time at large European facilities).

Location: University of Florence, Department of Chemistry “Ugo Schiff”, Sesto Fiorentino (Florence, Italy), and Procter & Gamble Services Company NV (Brussels, Belgium).

Position 3 (ESR3): the project will focus on the release kinetics and mechanisms of benefit agents from polymer encapsulation systems using different types of triggers (dilution, temperature, light or UV radiation, pH). The ESR will monitor the stability of the encapsulation system and the entire formulation upon aging by studying the potential changes in capsules morphology, active leakage, active and/or polymer degradation, and active-formulation and/or polymer-formulation interactions. To perform these tasks, the candidate will receive intensive training UV-Vis and Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Laser scanning Confocal Microscopy and Fluorescence Correlation spectroscopy.

Location: Procter & Gamble Services Company NV (Brussels, Belgium) and University of Florence, Department of Chemistry “Ugo Schiff”, Sesto Fiorentino (Florence, Italy).

Position 4 (ESR4):  the project will focus on testing the performance and life-time of capsules when deposited on various surfaces (e.g. textiles, skin and hair) by investigating properties such as stiffness, strength, release kinetics, and other key parameters that need to be carefully measured to improve the deposition of the capsules on surfaces. The ESR will be trained in several analytical techniques like confocal Raman spectroscopy to analyze the capsule surfaces and understand the chemistry at the surface of the capsule. Other characterization training will include techniques like Zeta potential measurement, surface energy measurement techniques via nano- indentation equipment, fluorescence spectroscopy, GCMS and TOF-SIMS.

Location: Procter & Gamble Services Company NV (Brussels, Belgium) and University of Florence, Department of Chemistry “Ugo Schiff”, Sesto Fiorentino (Florence, Italy).

In accordance with the MSCA regulations, selected candidates will receive a monthly gross salary of Euro 3413,88 for the Italian contract and 3270,00 for the Belgium contract. In addition, they will receive a mobility allowance up to Euro 600 per month and a family allowance up to Euro 500 per month (if applicable). The salary will be subjected to tax according to national regulations.
