The aim of this PhD project is to investigate mechanisms involved in neurodegeneration in glaucoma, identifying potential novel drug targets for neuroprotection. Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease in which the death of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) causes a progressive decline in visual function resulting ultimately in blindness. It is the major cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Raised intraocular pressure (IOP) is the major risk factor for glaucoma and all currently available treatments for glaucoma act to reduce IOP. However, glaucoma is often not associated with raised IOP (normotensive glaucoma) and patients with well-controlled IOP can also suffer decline in visual function. New ways to treat glaucoma are required that directly target the mechanism mediating vision loss, however, the precise mechanisms underlying RGC degeneration in glaucoma are not known. This PhD project will investigate the mechanisms of neurodegeneration in the human retina, using methods established in the Sanderson lab at UEA (1-5) specifically Human Organotypic Retinal Cultures (HORCs). By identifying novel targets we can find new ways to treat the disease. For more detailed information, please contact Dr Sanderson directly.

Interviews will be held at the end of February 2019
