Subject area: Fluorescence-guided surgery using nanobody-based tracers

Surgery remains an effective treatment for many types of cancer. Despite advances in surgical techniques, distinguishing malignant from benign tissues is still challenging. In the last years, fluorescence imaging using targeted fluorescent tracers has demonstrated enormous potential to guide peroperative decision-making and personalize surgical treatment.

Nanobodies are unique antibody-binding fragments derived from camelid heavy-chain antibodies with excellent properties for rapid and highly specific molecular imaging. In this project, we aim to develop and preclinically validate fluorescently-labeled nanobody-based tracers for image-guided surgery. Hereto, specific nanobodies targeting relevant cancer biomarkers will be generated and validated in preclinical animal models. By the end of the project, we aim to obtain fully in vitro and in vivo characterized nanobody-based fluorescent tracers ready for clinical translation.

    Eligibility criteria

    • Degree requirements: Master in Bio-Engineering sciences, Master in Biomedical Sciences, Master in (Medicinal) Chemistry or Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences
    • Career Stage: First Stage Researcher
    • Desired skillsKnowledge about and/or laboratory experience in Molecular Biology, Protein Engineering, Preclinical Imaging, and/or Animal Experimentation is an advantage
    • English language requirement: Applicants are required to be proficient in the English language. Those who have passed an English proficiency test such as IELTS or TOEFL should enclose the relevant certificate with their application. English proficiency of short listed applicants shall be assessed during the selection interview.
