The Department of Rheumatology and Inflammation Research is located at the Institute of Medicine at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. It is one of three EULAR Centers of Excellence in Sweden, offering a highly dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment. The major theme of the research performed at our department is inflammation, including autoimmune, allergic, or infection-induced. The research activities span from fundamental basic research over animal models of disease to clinical research. Within the department there is a mixture of clinical and basic scientists, each with a different expertise. There is a close collaboration between the research department and the rheumatology clinic. We also offer undergraduate courses for students who study pharmacy, medicine, biology, and medical laboratory science. At the Department 16 different active research groups that interact and collaborate. We share major equipment and we also have our own animal research facility, which allows all standard techniques and animal experiments to be performed.

The project will be performed through a VR-funded collaborative project between professors Kristina Eriksson, Henrik Zetterberg, and Søren Paludan at Sahlgrenska Academy, in collaboration with Søren Paludan’s laboratory, Aarhus University, Denmark. The groups involved cover broad and world-leading expertise in infection immunology, virology, and neurobiology.

Job assignments

The successful candidate will be leading an ambitious research project, and will be responsible for completing the research plan and coordinate interactions in the project group. The work involves advanced iPSC tissue culture, virus infection, qPCR, flow cytometry and protein analyses. In addition, some supervision of master´s students and PhD students is expected as well as teaching/administration of PhD courses, manuscript writing and the ability to attract research funding.


To qualify as a researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. The applicants should be highly self-motivated, well organized, and interactive. They should also be able to demonstrate a track record with several publications as first author in fields relevant for the present call. In addition, it is expected that the applicants have significant and documented experience with most standard and advanced methods in cell biology and immunology. Moreover, applicants with experience with stem cell culture work or other forms of advanced cell culture work will be preferred. Finally, the project includes international collaborations, and the applicants are expected to spend up to 10% of the time in Denmark. Particular emphasis will be on personal suitability.
