The UrbanOccupationsOETR is a multi-disciplinary digital humanities project with an international team focusing on geospatial analysis of economic and demographic data. We are extracting, curating, and analysing spatially coded data on economic and population geography for Southeast Europe and Anatolia. Historical maps are important data sources which we use, therefore we are expecting to have a research fellow who could also help the team with automatized and customised feature extraction from historical maps using computer vision and machine learning techniques.
In addition to data extraction and data curations the fellow will be given tasks in subprojects of our research effort such as:
- devising multi-modal historical transport networks on DEMs
- geo-sampling methods using historical connectivity, soil, ruggedness and remote sensing data
- geospatial predictive modelling.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate holding a PhD Degree in a related field. The successful candidate should have strong analytical skills, is expected to be proactive, self-driven with strong problem-solving abilities and out-of-the-box thinking. Knowledge of GIS based systems and programming (e.g. R, Python) are required. We are expecting to publish our research outcomes at the highest scientific level and to develop international multi-disciplinary collaborations. The successful applicant should be able to work both individually with discipline and contribute to the teamwork.
