Four PhD positions are offered within the 5GhOSTS project. 5GhOSTS aims to deliver secure light-weight virtualization and container orchestration technology for upcoming 5G networks.

Context: The telecom industry is migrating to virtualized and orchestrated environments, allowing the deployment of Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) on cloud infrastructure enabling the concept of network slicing. State-of-the-art lightweight virtualization such as Docker and container orchestration frameworks such as Kubernetes clearly contribute to this driver, but do not meet the stringent security requirements of telecommunication systems.

The objectives of the 5GhOSTS project are:

  1. To form an international and interdisciplinary research group of four Early-Stage-Researchers (ESRs) and senior researchers. The ESRs will develop transferable skills, both soft and technical skills that will uplift their future careers in the telecommunication sector. The ambitious training networks leverages academic excellence of KU Leuven and the leadership driven research of Ericsson, together with a strong business- and innovation-oriented mind-set, to develop technical skills for securing the mobile networks of the future, with a thorough understanding of legal and business aspects.
  2. To design, implement and release a number of building blocks for secure lightweight virtualization and container orchestration technology for upcoming 5G networks, which provide a strong, well-understood and formalized notion of security, and which complies with legal requirements with respect to data privacy. These building blocks will be a high-priority asset for the Ericsson’s competitiveness in 5G product development;
  3. To address the growing need of the EU economy for young researchers with a strong profile (technical, legal and economic) in the 5G telecommunications domain, thus increasing the researchers’ international competitiveness.

Three PhD students will work in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), focussing mainly on security and partially on performance, and one PhD student in legal studies focusing on sustainable and effective privacy in 5G networks. The Recruitment is in accordance with the European Charter and Code of Conduct for the recruitment of researchers.

Benefits

The successful candidates will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for Early Stage Researchers. The exact (net) salary will be confirmed upon appointment and is dependent on local tax regulations and on the country correction factor (to allow for the difference in cost of living in different EU Member States). The salary includes a living allowance, a mobility allowance and, if applicable, a family allowance (if married and/or dependent children). In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.

Eligibility criteria

Degree: Master degree or equivalent providing access to PhD programmes. See attachment for required degree for each position. Applicants must not have a doctoral degree.

Language: English proficiency must be attested either through a previous English language diploma, or an internationally recognised proficiency test (at least C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages i.e. IELTS, IBT, TOEFL or Cambridge).

Career: When starting their contract, selected researchers should be within the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged. Furthermore, the researcher should not have been awarded a prior doctoral degree so far.

Mobility: At the date of recruitment, the researcher must not have resided, or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of the hiring institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.

Application: Complete and timely submission exclusively via the 5GHOSTS on-line application system. Documents submitted must be in English. If supporting documents (e.g., letters of academic references and scan of degree qualification) are not in English, they must be submitted together with a certified translation in English).

Please note that, in addition to the above mentioned eligibility criteria, further requirements are detailed for each PhD position in the individual ESR descriptions. (see https://www.5ghosts.eu)
