The European University Institute (EUI) is a unique international centre for doctorate and post-doctorate studies and research, situated in the Tuscan hills overlooking Florence. The EUI’s distinctly international environment offers unique academic training, enriches the intellectual experience and provides exceptional opportunities for academics across disciplines and borders. The EUI is characterised by its thriving intellectual climate, rich in seminars, conferences, and events, hosting leading academics and policy-makers from around the world.

The EUI offers four-year Ph.D. programmes in four departments: Economics, History and Civilization, Law and Political and Social Sciences. Each year there are approximately 150 fully-funded scholarships for Ph.D. study, provided by EUI Member States and Associated Member States.

On behalf of the Dutch government, Nuffic provides 8 scholarships for a fully-funded four-year doctoral programme for the coming round (for admission September 2019).

To qualify for the Dutch Ph.D. grant, you must meet specific requirements, including:

  • You must have obtained a doctoral diploma or master’s degree;
  • You must be a Dutch national or meet the nationality requirements to be eligible for Dutch student finance on 31 January 2019.

Nuffic provides a monthly grant for the first three years of the EUI Ph.D. programme. The monthly allowance exists of 1635 EUR (including 90 EUR for your monthly health assurance) for the first three years. In addition, you will receive a yearly allowance of 315 EUR for your travel costs. The tuition fee of 12.000 EUR is fully covered by the grant. If applicable, you could receive additional subsidy if you have a partner and/or a child. The fourth year is covered by the EUI.

The deadline for applications is 31 January 2019 (for admission September 2019). You must complete the online application form and be sure all required documents have been submitted in time (including the reference letters! When you register your referees' contact details in the online application form, an email requesting a reference on your behalf is automatically sent to the referees you have nominated.).
