ASEAN-EU Cooperation in Science & Technology

Scientific cooperation with Southeast Asia became a higher priority on the political agenda since 2007 on the occasion of the 16th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting in Nuremberg, Germany. The reasons for this were the mutual interest expressed by officials to strengthen further our co-operation and the reciprocal will to share experience on S&T issues of common concern such as health, food safety and energy supply.

The biggest EU research and innovation programme ever, Horizon 2020 is based on 3 pillars: Excellent Science, Industrial Leadership and Societal Challenges.

European Research Council: Open to the world

The ERC is a flagship component of Horizon 2020’s Excellent Science. ERC is a top funding body providing funding for excellent researchers of any nationality, to carry out frontier research in Europe, via annual competitions. The ERC's mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields, on the basis of scientific excellence.

Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (MSCA) under Horizon 2020’s Excellent Science provide grants for all stages of researchers' careers and encourage transnational, intersectoral and interdisciplinary mobility. The MSCA enable research-focused organisations (universities, research centres, and companies) to host talented foreign researchers and to create strategic partnerships with leading institutions worldwide. The MSCA are open to all domains of research and innovation.

ASEAN-EU Research & Innovation Collaboration

Scientific cooperation with South-East Asia has become a high priority on the political agenda since the 16th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting in Nuremberg, Germany in 2007. Mutual interest in further strengthening the co-operation and the reciprocal will to share experience on S&T issues of common concern were the main driving forces. This was also supported by the strong participation of ASEAN participants in the EU Research Framework Programmes.

We focus on two actions:

To provide regular, up-to-date and reliable information

To organise networking, information and training events

Our community consists of over 7000 scientists & researchers, research administrators and business representatives who are interested in scientific collaborations between Europe and Southeast Asia.

EURAXESS ASEAN organizes or co-organizes networking, information and training events across ASEAN. Each event addresses topics of interest to the multidisciplinary community of researchers in ASEAN.

EURAXESS ASEAN organises two annual flagship events;

“Advancing your research career in Europe: Funding and Fellowship opportunities for Researchers in Southeast Asia”

This event offers and opportunity to engage with representatives of leading research organizations and funding agencies from across Europe and to find out about the variety of fellowship and mobility schemes open to Southeast Asian researchers. The programme focuses on information about available opportunities for career advancement by working at labs, universities, research institutes and companies across Europe. The event also includes hands-on advice from invited alumni of various European programmes.

“European Research Day – Science Communication Workshop Series”

This very hands-on event focuses on providing motivated, highly talented researchers in ASEAN with a set of science communication skills so as to increase the number of successful applications to European funding and fellowship programs by researchers based in ASEAN. Each workshop covers the range of skills needed to enable the researchers to effectively promote themselves and communicate their science to a wide and variable audience, using the plethora of tools available today. Each workshop is led by an expert trainer from Europe.

EURAXESS ASEAN country representatives frequently address researchers during on-site visits to universities, research institutes and companies across ASEAN. During the visit the EURAXESS ASEAN representative will introduce the services offered by the EURAXESS network to assist researchers who would like to embark on a research mobility experience in Europe. The representative will present on existing research cooperation and career opportunities in Europe or with European partners. Eligibility and application procedure to key European researcherer mobility programmes, including the European Research Council (ERC) and the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions MSCA, will also be introduced.
