Re-establishing International Ties: The Transatlantic Big Science Conference – October 31st & November 1st, 2022 in Washington, D.C.

Global research is at a crossroads. Numerous political, societal, and technological challenges face humankind, right as cooperation between nations has weakened due to political situations across the globe. Scientists around the world are concerned how enormous threats to human civilisation can be managed without international collaboration that has so far been the standard in research.

The German research center DESY and the U.S. Carnegie Institution for Science have therefore launched the initiative of a "The Transatlantic Big Science Conference." The initiative is driven by the idea that transatlantic science relations need to be refocused and strengthened to re-establish international ties and to better respond to urgent global challenges:

  • Impact of climate crisis;
  • fighting global pandemics;
  • new technologies and the risk of a decoupled world;
  • weakening trust in science and the risk of academic freedom under threat;
  • impact of geopolitical tensions on international science cooperation, especially the need for a new role of science diplomacy.

Through panel discussions and intensive thematic tables, the Transatlantic Big Science Conference will seek to reinforce communications between research organizations and labs, forge new cooperation, initiate new strategic developments, and help prepare the research environment to better respond to future threats.

The conference will be held on October 31st and November 1st, 2022 in Washington, D.C. and will bring together numerous scientific leaders from around world. For more information and whether you wish to attend as an institution or individual, please visit the event homepage below:
