Research talent programme worth €12.7m launched by university alliance EuroTech

EuroTech Universities Alliance, a strategic partnership of six leading universities of science and technology, supports the career development of young high-potential researchers with a postdoctoral fellowship programme worth €12.7 million. Within this ‘EuroTechPostdoc2’ programme (ETPD2) – co-funded by EU’s Horizon 2020 – the universities will offer seventy grants to postdoctoral researchers over the next five years, who will receive trainings on multidisciplinary research and entrepreneurship, and exchange opportunities with the involved partners. EuroTechPostdoc2 will have an official online kick-off on June 24th.

The EuroTech Universities Alliance is a strategic partnership consisting of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Technical University of Munich (TUM), École Polytechnique (L’X) and Technion Israel Institute of Technology. ‘EuroTechPostdoc2’ is the successor of a programme EuroTech launched in 2017.

70 fellowships

The universities will grant 70 fellowships for a 24-month period to collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects across the alliance. Eindhoven University of Technology coordinates the programme, which has a total worth of €12.7 million, with €5.1 million coming from European Union’s Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions COFUND programme and another €7.6 million put forward by the universities in the alliance.

This post-doc programme provides a strong contribution to the education of the next generation of leading European scientists,” says Robert-Jan Smits, president of Eindhoven University of Technology. “It helps young top PhD's to boost their academic skills and enables them to broaden their horizon and establish international networks. This second EuroTech postdoc programme underlines the value of our alliance of top European universities of technology and I am proud that Eindhoven University of Technology is leading this programme.

Tatiana Panteli, Head of the EuroTech Brussels Office:

We are proud to offer the excellent expertise and infrastructure of the EuroTech Universities to talented postdoctoral researchers, who will shape international science and contribute to solving societal challenges. Doing an international post-doc will allow these young researchers to gain a global perspective, to be exposed to new ideas, teaching styles and academic cultures that will shape their work and future.

Host and co-host

The ETPD2 programme focuses on young experienced researchers who have already demonstrated excellence and potential in their research field. It provides international research and career development opportunities. “Fellows are trained in multidisciplinary research settings and are offered entrepreneurship opportunities including intersectoral mobility with industry”, says Ingrid Vliegen, ETPD2 programme manager. “Each fellow will have a host and a co-host supervisor at two different EuroTech universities to provide valuable international research experience.”

The first EuroTechPostdoc programme, coordinated by TUM, was one of the first cross-country fellowship programmes when it launched in 2017. Fellows appreciate the personal approach and the exchange of valuable experiences between fellows.

On June 24th, ETPD2 will be officially opened by Robert-Jan Smits.
